Leash Walking & Reactivity

The Leash Walking & Reactivity Training Package teaches you how to walk a beagle on a leash, what the three types of beagle walks are, and how to prevent or manage reactivity while on the leash.

  • It’s a common myth that beagles require excessive daily exercise and mental stimulation. In reality, beagles didn’t hunt every day; they needed rest days, especially to recharge their brains. This training will guide you on the types of walks suitable for beagles and the appropriate duration for each.

  • Too much daily stimulation can lead to problems on the leash, including pulling and reactivity. It can also affect their behaviour at home, making them more likely to nip, destroy things, develop anxiety, and resource guard.

  • You’ll learn how to calm your beagle and curb the pulling before progressing to reactivity training.

  • It's important to prevent reactivity by ensuring you don’t oversocialise your beagle. However, if your beagle already exhibits reactivity, we will work on minimising or eradicating those behaviours together.

Please note that if you are witnessing aggressive-looking behaviour, it may be necessary to consult with Kellie for a more tailored approach.

Beagle Recall Training

The Beagle Recall Training Package teaches you not only how to recall train a beagle but also whether you should actually let them off-leash in the first place! Many variables come into play with beagle recall that aren’t considered in generic obedience training.

  • Beagle puppies can lull you into a false sense of security, and most will seem to have nearly 100% recall. This is because they rely on you for survival and don’t want to lose you.

  • However, once adolescence hits, the true beagle emerges—the one that wasn’t bred for obedience and isn’t genetically programmed to recall like more people-pleasing breeds, such as Labradors.

  • I teach beagle recall in three stages, and they will move through these stages throughout their lives. Some may never progress beyond stage one due to their high hunting instinct, making it challenging for them to go off-leash.

  • I also emphasise that you don’t need to let your beagle off-leash every walk. Using a long line allows your beagle to scent, which is far more tiring for them and will lead to more napping than a play session with their best friend at the park.

Hunting Season runs from fall to spring, and even though our beagles are domesticated, many will change during this time. As a result, many of us have to revert to using long lines until the weather warms up.

Beagle Resource Guarding

Resource guarding is one of the most challenging behaviours owners might face during any stage.

This training focuses on understanding and addressing this issue with empathy and science-based methods.

What’s Included:

  1. What is Resource Guarding? Understanding the root cause and what triggers this behaviour.
  2. Common Guarding Triggers: From toys and food to unexpected items like socks or furniture.
  3. Signs of Resource Guarding: Recognising the subtle cues before it escalates to growling, snapping, or biting.
  4. Safe Management Techniques: Practical strategies to handle guarding without confrontation or punishment.
  5. Building Trust: Exercises to reduce your beagle’s anxiety around valued items.
  6. Prevention Tactics: Steps to ensure guarding doesn’t become a long-term habit.

This training is ideal for beagle owners who want to address resource guarding effectively.

However, if your beagle is biting, it’s best to book a call with Kellie for more personalised training.

Introduction to Separation Anxiety in Beagles

Separation anxiety is a common but often misunderstood issue in beagles, particularly as they are a pack breed and were never meant to be on their own.

What’s Included:

  1. What is Separation Anxiety? Understanding how it differs from other behaviours like boredom or frustration.
  2. Recognising the Signs: From whining and barking to destructive behaviour and other indicators of stress.
  3. Common Triggers: Identifying the situations that may spark your beagle’s anxiety, such as changes in routine or prolonged absences.
  4. Resetting Alone Time Associations: Teaching your beagle that being alone can be calm and safe.
  5. Prevention vs. Management: Steps to prevent separation anxiety in younger dogs and effective strategies for managing existing cases.
  6. Myths and Misconceptions: Debunking common advice that can worsen anxiety, like leaving puzzles or food to distract them.

This introduction is perfect for beagle owners looking to take the first steps in addressing separation anxiety with a view to working with Kellie long-term on this issue.
